Ask a Librarian

Searching

  1. Select database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
  2. Type a word or phrase in the search box.
    (Optional) Select the field to search, or search within the FULL TEXT.
  3. Click on SEARCH.

Combining Terms

Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.

Example: environmental or ecological

Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.

Example: china and business

Truncating Terms

Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of a search term.

Example: environment* (retrieves environment, environmental, environmentally)

Proximity Searching

Use quotation marks to find words next to each other in that order.

Example: "guide to microsoft"

Author Searching

  1. Select AUTHOR and enter the first and last name in either order.
  2. Example: joe kraynak

  3. Click on SEARCH.

Searching eContent

  1. From within an ebook, enter a word or phrase in the SEARCH THIS eCONTENT box.
  2. Click on SEARCH.

Creating a NetLibrary Account

A NetLibrary account enables you to create a list of favorites and save personal notes related to content.

  1. Click on CREATE A FREE ACCOUNT at the top of the screen.
  2. Fill in the form, using any user name. NetLibrary eBook accounts are not part of your UW-Madison Libraries record.
  3. Click on CREATE ACCOUNT.

Displaying Search Results

  1. Use the SCROLL BAR to move through records on the page.
    (Optional) Change the sorting order of your records.
  2. Click on SHOW DETAILS to see information about the book.
  3. Click on BACK TO SEARCH RESULTS to return to the list of titles.

Reading eBooks Online

  1. Click on VIEW THIS EBOOK to read a book.
  2. Use the NEXT and PREVIOUS buttons to move through the pages.
    (Optional) Enter a page number and click on GO.
    (Optional) Click on the table of contents on the left side of the screen.

Selecting Records

  1. Click ADD TO FAVORITES to select a book for later reading by logging into your NetLibrary account.
  2. Display search results.
  3. Click on ADD TO MY LIST.

Saving Search Results

To download a page from a book, you must be viewing the page. Only one page can be downloaded at a time.

  1. Click on ADOBE ACROBAT TOOLS.
  2. Click on the file icon.

  1. Click on SHOW DETAILS of the desired book.
  2. Click on EMAIL THIS INFORMATION.

  1. Open the page of the book you want to email.
  2. Click on ADOBE ACROBAT TOOLS.
  3. Click on the email icon.

Beginning a New Search

  1. Use BASIC or ADVANCED SEARCH on the right side of the screen.

Getting Help

Click on HELP for on-screen help.

For further assistance, consult library staff.

Exiting

  1. Click on browser's HOME at the top of the screen to return to the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
    (Optional) If you have logged in to NetLibrary, click on LOG OUT.
