Ask a Librarian

Searching

  1. Select database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
  2. Type a word or phrase in the FULL-TEXT search box.
    (Optional)Select other search fields from the drop down menu.
  3. Click SEARCH.

Combining Terms

Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search. OR must be in all capital letters

Example: environmental OR ecological

Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search. AND must be in all capital letters.

Example: cortez AND aztec

Truncating Terms

Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of a search term.

Example: aztec* (retrieves aztec, aztecs, aztecism)

Proximity Searching

Use quotation marks to find words next to each other in that order.

Example: "montezuma county"

Use NEAR to finds words in the same sentence regardless of word order. NEAR must be in all capital letters.

Example: cortez NEAR montezuma

Author Searching

  1. Select AUTHOR and enter the first and last name in either order.
  2. Example: joe kraynak

  3. Click SEARCH.

Searching eContent

  1. From within an ebook, enter a word or phrase in the SEARCH THIS eCONTENT box.
  2. Click SEARCH.

Creating a NetLibrary Account

A NetLibrary account enables you to create a list of favorites and save personal notes related to content.

  1. Click CREATE A FREE ACCOUNT at the top of the screen.
  2. Fill in the form, using any user name. NetLibrary eBook accounts are not part of your UW-Madison Libraries record.
  3. Click CREATE ACCOUNT.

Displaying Search Results

  1. Use the SCROLL BAR to move through records on the page.
    (Optional) Change the sorting order of your records.
  2. Click the book cover icon to read the book.
  3. Click BACK TO SEARCH RESULTS to return to the list of titles.

Reading eBooks Online

  1. Click VIEW THIS EBOOK to read a book.
  2. Use the NEXT and PREVIOUS buttons to move through the pages.
    (Optional) Enter a page number and click GO.
    (Optional) Click CONTENTS tab on the left side of the screen.

Selecting Records

  1. Click ADD TO FAVORITES to select a book for later reading by logging into your NetLibrary account.
  2. Display search results.
  3. Click ADD TO MY LIST.

Saving Search Results

  1. View the page.
  2. Use the browser's save.
    (Optional) If available, click ADOBE ACROBAT TOOLS and click the save icon.

Emailing Search Results

Emailing One Record

  1. Click SHOW DETAILS of the desired book.
  2. Click EMAIL THIS INFORMATION.

  1. View the page.
  2. Use the browser's send page by email.
    (Optional) If available, click ADOBE ACROBAT TOOLS and click the email icon.

Beginning a New Search

  1. Use BASIC or ADVANCED SEARCH on the right side of the screen.

Getting Help

Click HELP for on-screen help.

For further assistance, consult library staff.

Exiting

  1. Click browser's HOME at the top of the screen to return to the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
    (Optional) If you have logged in to NetLibrary, click LOG OUT.
