Searching
- Select database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
- Click ARTICLE SEARCH.
- Type a word or phrase in the SEARCH FOR box.
- Click SEARCH.
Combining Terms
Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.
Example: dickens or boz
Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.
Example: dickens and trollope
Truncating Terms
Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of a search term.
Example: theat* (retrieves theater, theatre, theatrical)
Proximity Searching
Use quotation marks to find words next to each other in that order.
Example: "barnaby rudge"

Author Searching
- Change ALL FIELDS (W/TEXT)drop down box to ARTICLE AUTHOR and type in author's name in either order.
Example: susan bernstein - Click SEARCH.
Journal Searching
To find a specific article:
- Change ALL FIELDS (W/TEXT) drop down box to ARTICLE TITLE and type in the article title or words in title.
Example: charles dickens and the movement for sanitary reform - Click SEARCH.
To browse a specific journal:
- Click BROWSE JOURNALS tab at the top of the screen.
- Move through list and click desired journal.
- Click desired volume, issue.
Displaying Search Results
- Move through records on the page.
- Click NEXT> or <PREV to display more records.
- Click PDF VERSION or article title to display the full text of the article.
Selecting Records
- Click in the box to the left of the record or click MARK ALL to mark for later printing, downloading or emailing.
- Click SAVE MARKED RESULTS.
Printing Search Results
Printing One Article
- Click PDF VERSION.
- Click OK to view PDF.
- Click on PRINTER in image window.
- Click OK.
Printing Records
- Click VIEW SAVED RESULTS.
- Click in circle next to PRINTER FRIENDLY FORMAT.
- Click EXPORT.
- Use browser print function to print.
- Click X at upper right to close window.
Saving Search Results
Downloading One Article
- Click PDF VERSION.
- Click OK to view PDF.
- Insert removal storage device (i.e., flashdrive, memory stick, 3 1/2" disk ...).
- Click on DISK image in image window.
- Click OK.
- Type the disk drive letter, the filename and extension in the FILE NAME box.
Example: a:myfile.pdf - Click SAVE.
- Click X at upper right to close window.
Downloading Records
- Click VIEW SAVED RESULTS.
- Click in circle next to PRINTER FRIENDLY FORMAT.
- Click EXPORT.
- Use browser save function.
- Type the disk drive letter, the filename and extension in the FILE NAME box.
Example: a:myfile.txt - Click SAVE.
- Click X at upper right to close window.

Emailing Search Results
- Click VIEW SAVED RESULTS.
- Click in circle next to E-MAIL.
- Click EXPORT.
- Type email address in TO: box.
