Ask a Librarian

Searching

  1. Select database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
  2. Click on POWER SEARCH.
  3. Click in the ENTER SEARCH TERMS box. Type a word or phrase. Use quotation marks around phrases.
  4. Click in the circle next to TERMS AND CONNECTORS.
    (Optional) Click in the circle next to NATURAL LANGUAGE.
  5. Select desired options from SELECT SOURCES and SPECIFY DATE drop-down menus.
  6. Click on SEARCH.

Combining Terms

Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.

Example: casinos or gaming

Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.

Example: casinos and Wisconsin

Truncating Terms

Use ! to replace one or more characters at the end of a search term.

Example: drug! (retrieves drug, drugs, druggist)

Use * to replace one character with a search term

Example: wom*n (retrieves woman, women)

Proximity Searching

Use quotation marks " " around phrase.

Example: "internet policy"

Combining Search Sets

Author Searching

  1. Click on SHOW next to SELECT SOURCES.
  2. Select BYLINE from SECTION drop-down menu.
  3. Click in the TERMS search box. Type the author's first name, w/3, last name.

    Example: george w/3 will

  4. Click ADD TO SEARCH. Terms appear in ENTER SEARCH TERMS box.

Journal Searching

To find a specific source:

  1. Click on FIND MORE SOURCES to the right of SELECT SOURCES drop-down menu.
  2. Click in the FIND A SOURCE search box in the upper right of screen. Type the journal or part of the title.
  3. Click on GO.
  4. Click in the box to the left of desired title(s).
  5. Click on OK - CONTINUE. Source is added to POWER SEARCH form.
  6. Click on SEARCH.

To find sources by COUNTRY (including region, state):

  1. Click on FIND MORE SOURCES to the right of SELECT SOURCES drop-down menu.
  2. Click in the circle next to PUBLICATION TYPE.
  3. Select country or region from COUNTRY drop-down menu. (Optional) Select region or state from ALL REGIONS drop-down menu if United States chosen.
  4. Select category (e.g., NEWS) to view sources. (Optional) Select another category to view titles.
  5. Click in the box to the left of desired title(s).
  6. Click on OK - CONTINUE. Source is added POWER SEARCH form.
  7. Click on SEARCH.

Displaying Search Results

Records matching the last search are automatically displayed.

  1. Use the SCROLL BAR to move through records on the page.
  2. Click on the right arrow at the top of the screen to display more records.
  3. Click on the title of the article to display the text of the article.
    (Optional) Click on the arrows to display next or previous article.
  4. Click on RESULTS tab to return to the results list.

Display results by RESULT GROUPS.

  1. Select desired options from SOURCES BY CATEGORY drop-down menu.
    (Optional) Click on plus sign (+) to view all subcategories of result groups.
  2. Click on a result group to view results from a group.

Selecting Records

A list of records may be selected for later printing, downloading or emailing.

Saving Search Results

Saving an Article

  1. Click on DOWNLOAD DOCUMENTS (disk) icon in upper right of screen.
  2. Select desired option from FORMAT drop-down menu.
  3. Select desired option from DOCUMENT VIEW drop-down menu.
  4. Click in the circle next to CURRENT DOCUMENT under DOCUMENT RANGE.
  5. Select desired option under PAGE OPTIONS.
  6. Select font from FONT OPTIONS drop-down menu.
  7. Select desired option for display of search terms.
  8. Click DOWNLOAD.
  9. Insert a removable storage device (e.g., flash drive, memory stick, 3-1/2" disk).
  10. Click on document link.
  11. Click in the circle next to SAVE TO DISK and click OK.
  12. Type the disk drive letter, the filename and extension in the FILE NAME box.
  13. Example: a: myfile.DOC

    Example: a: myfile.HTML

    Example: a: myfile.RTF

    Example: a: myfile.TXT

    Example: a: myfile.PDF

  14. Click on SAVE.
  15. Click CLOSE WINDOW.

Saving Selected Articles

  1. Click in the boxes to the left of desired records.
  2. Click on DOWNLOAD DOCUMENTS (disk) icon in upper right of screen.
  3. Select desired option from FORMAT drop-down menu.
  4. Select desired option from DOCUMENT VIEW drop-down menu.
  5. Click in the circle next to TAGGED RECORDS under DOCUMENT RANGE.
  6. Select desired option under PAGE OPTIONS.
  7. Select font from FONT OPTIONS drop-down menu.
  8. Select desired option for display of search terms.
  9. Click DOWNLOAD.
  10. Insert a removable storage device (e.g., flash drive, memory stick, 3-1/2" disk ...).
  11. Click on document file link.
  12. Select SAVE TO DISK and click OK.
  13. Type the disk drive letter, the filename and extension in the FILE NAME box.

  14. Click on SAVE.

  8. Select desired font options for display of search terms.
  9. Click SEND.

Beginning a New Search

  1. Select NEW SEARCH from NEXT STEPS drop-down menu in upper right of results screen.
  2. Click GO.

Getting Help

  1. Click on HELP in upper right of the screen for on-screen help.

Exiting

  1. Click on SIGN OUT at the upper right of the screen.
