Searching
- Select database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
- Click on POWER SEARCH.
- Click in the ENTER SEARCH TERMS box. Type a word or phrase. Use quotation marks around phrases.
- Click in the circle next to TERMS AND CONNECTORS. (Optional) Click in the circle next to NATURAL LANGUAGE.
- Select desired options from SELECT SOURCES and SPECIFY DATE drop-down menus.
- Click on SEARCH.
Combining Terms
Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.
Example: casinos or gaming
Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.
Example: casinos and Wisconsin
Truncating Terms
Use ! to replace one or more characters at the end of a search term.
Example: drug! (retrieves drug, drugs, druggist)
Use * to replace one character with a search term
Example: wom*n (retrieves woman, women)
Proximity Searching
Use quotation marks " " around phrase.
Example: "internet policy"

Author Searching
- Click on SHOW next to SELECT SOURCES.
- Select BYLINE from SECTION drop-down menu.
- Click in the TERMS search box. Type the author's first name, w/3, last name.
Example: george w/3 will
- Click ADD TO SEARCH. Terms appear in ENTER SEARCH TERMS box.
Journal Searching
To find a specific source:
- Click on FIND MORE SOURCES to the right of SELECT SOURCES drop-down menu.
- Click in the FIND A SOURCE search box in the upper right of screen. Type the journal or part of the title.
- Click on GO.
- Click in the box to the left of desired title(s).
- Click on OK - CONTINUE. Source is added to POWER SEARCH form.
- Click on SEARCH.
To find sources by COUNTRY (including region, state):
- Click on FIND MORE SOURCES to the right of SELECT SOURCES drop-down menu.
- Click in the circle next to PUBLICATION TYPE.
- Select country or region from COUNTRY drop-down menu. (Optional) Select region or state from ALL REGIONS drop-down menu if United States chosen.
- Select category (e.g., NEWS) to view sources. (Optional) Select another category to view titles.
- Click in the box to the left of desired title(s).
- Click on OK - CONTINUE. Source is added POWER SEARCH form.
- Click on SEARCH.
Displaying Search Results
Records matching the last search are automatically displayed.
- Use the SCROLL BAR to move through records on the page.
- Click on the right arrow at the top of the screen to display more records.
- Click on the title of the article to display the text of the article. (Optional) Click on the arrows to display next or previous article.
- Click on RESULTS tab to return to the results list.
Display results by RESULT GROUPS.
- Select desired options from SOURCES BY CATEGORY drop-down menu. (Optional) Click on plus sign (+) to view all subcategories of result groups.
- Click on a result group to view results from a group.

A list of records may be selected for later printing, downloading or emailing.
Printing Search Results
Printing an Article
- Click on PRINT DOCUMENTS (printer) icon in upper right of screen.
- Select desired option from DOCUMENT VIEW drop-down menu.
- Click in circle next to CURRENT DOCUMENT under DOCUMENT RANGE.
- Select desired option under PAGE OPTIONS.
- Select desired option from FONT OPTIONS drop-down menu.
- Select desired option for display of search terms.
- Click PRINT.
Printing Selected Articles
- Click in the boxes to the left of desired records.
- Click on PRINT DOCUMENTS (printer) icon in upper right of screen.
- Select desired option from DOCUMENT VIEW drop-down menu.
- Click in the circle next to TAGGED RECORDS under DOCUMENT RANGE.
- Select desired option under PAGE OPTIONS.
- Select desired option from FONT OPTIONS drop-down menu.
- Select desired option for display of search terms.
- Click PRINT.
Saving Search Results
Saving an Article
- Click on DOWNLOAD DOCUMENTS (disk) icon in upper right of screen.
- Select desired option from FORMAT drop-down menu.
- Select desired option from DOCUMENT VIEW drop-down menu.
- Click in the circle next to CURRENT DOCUMENT under DOCUMENT RANGE.
- Select desired option under PAGE OPTIONS.
- Select font from FONT OPTIONS drop-down menu.
- Select desired option for display of search terms.
- Click DOWNLOAD.
- Insert a removable storage device (e.g., flash drive, memory stick, 3-1/2" disk).
- Click on document link.
- Click in the circle next to SAVE TO DISK and click OK.
- Type the disk drive letter, the filename and extension in the FILE NAME box.
- Click on SAVE.
- Click CLOSE WINDOW.
