Searching

Note: The full text of books will be searched.

  1. Select database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
  2. Type a word or phrase in the SEARCH box.
    (Optional) Limit your search by selecting choices from the ALL TEXT, ALL SUBJECT AREAS, or My SUBSCRIPTION drop down boxes.
  3. Click on SEARCH.
  4. Click on a title to view retrieved sections.

Combining Terms

Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.

Example: acentric or accentric

Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.

Example: benzene and enthalpy

Truncating Terms

Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of a search term.

Example: reaction* (retrieves: reaction, reactions)

Proximity Searching

Keywords separated by spaces are found within approximately 10 words of each other on the same text page or within the same row of an interactive table.

Example: benzene enthalpy (retrieves: enthalpy of benzene)

Use quotation marks to find words next to each other in that order.

Example: "thermal shock resistance"

Author Searching

  1. Type a word or phrase in the SEARCH box.
  2. Limit your search by AUTHOR from the ALL TEXT drop down box.
  3. Click on SEARCH.

Book Title Searching

  1. Type a word or phrase in the SEARCH box.
  2. Limit your search by TITLE from the ALL TEXT drop down box.
  3. Click on SEARCH.

Fielded Searching

Use Fielded Search to find keyword in the full text of books, in searchable text and numeric fields of interactive tables, or in special indices.

  1. Click on FIELDED SEARCH.
  2. Select a CATEGORY from the category drop down menu.
  3. Select a FIELD NAME and OPERATOR
    Note: Field name choices change depending on which category is selected. Click on SEARCHABLE CATEGORIES AND FIELD NAMES to learn more.
    (Optional) Use the operator IS NOT NULL (EXISTS) to find any value in that field.
  4. Click on SEARCH.

    Example:
    CATEGORY: keyword
    FIELD NAME: all text fields
    OPERATOR: is (=)
    KEYWORD: formaldehyde
    <

    AND
    CATEGORY: hazard-related properties
    FIELD NAME: flash point
    OPERATOR: is not null (exists)

  5. Click on title, then click on text or table.

Working with Interactive Tables

To search within a table, you must be viewing a table.

  1. Click on FILTER DATA IN TABLE.
  2. Select a column and enter value or keyword.
  3. Sort table by clicking on CHANGE COLUMN ORDER.
    (Optional) Select rows for downloading by checking the boxes next to desired rows and clicking on EXPORT TABLE.
    (Optional) Click on UNIT CONVERTER to convert measurement units to your choice.

Displaying Search Results

  1. Use SCROLL BAR to move through results.
  2. Click on desired title.
  3. Click on the TEXT or TABLE to retrieve the section which includes your search terms.

Displaying Citation Information

  1. Click on desired title.
  2. Click on the CITATION.
    (Optional) Add page number information.
  3. Click on CONTINUE and save or copy the citation as desired.

Displaying Tables with Interactive Graph Plotter

To use the interactive plotter, you must be viewing a table that contains the interactive graph plotter tool.

  1. Select row(s) of data to be digitized.
  2. Click on SHOW GRAPH.
  3. Click on the curve(s) to select data points.
    (Optional) Enter values in the x cell and click on the y cell to calculate y values.
    (Optional) Change units of the x and y axes.

Displaying Tables with Equation Plotter

To use the equation plotter, you must be viewing a table that contains the equation plotter productivity tool.

  1. Click on the equation icon in the desired row of data.
  2. Click on the curve(s) to select data points.
    (Optional) Enter values in the x cell and click on the y cell to calculate y values.
    (Optional) Change units of the x and y axes.

Displaying Graphs with Graph Digitizer

To use the graph digitizer, you must be viewing a table that contains the graph digitizer tool.

  1. Click on the curve(s) to select x and y values.
    (Optional) Click on the NEW CURVE icon under CURVE NAVIGATION to digitize another curve.

Selecting Records

Some books have interactive tables with rows of data that can be selected for printing and downloading.

Saving Search Results

To save a section from a book you must be viewing the book section.

  1. Insert removable storage device. (i.e. flash drive, memory stick, 3 1/2" disk ...)
  2. Click on print icon in the Knovel image window.
  3. Type the disk drive letter, the filename, and the extension .pdf in the FILE NAME box.

Emailing Search Results

  1. Launch your email and attach your file.
