Searching

Videos: Accessing JSTOR

  1. Select JSTOR from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
  2. Click on ADVANCED SEARCH.
  3. Type a word or phrase in the search box.
    Use quotation marks around phrases.
  4. Click on SEARCH.

Combining Terms

Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.

Example: wetland or marsh

Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.

Example: prairie and restoration

Truncating Terms

Use the asterisk * to replace more than one character at the end of a search term.

Example: bird* (retrieves bird, birding, birdsong)

Use ? to replace zero or one character at the end of a search term.

Example: bird? (retrieves bird, birds)

Proximity Searching

Use quotation marks to find words next to each other in that order.

Example: "prairie restoration"

Use the quotation marks and the tilde ~ mark to find terms within a specified number(#) of words of one another regardless of the order in which they appear .

Example:"prairie restoration" ~4 (retrieves prairie restoration, prairie grass restoration, restoration of tallgrass prairie, etc.)

Combining Search Sets

Author Searching

  1. Click on ADVANCED SEARCH.
  2. Type the first initial(s) and the last name of the author within quotation marks.
  3. Example:"j andrews"

  4. Select AUTHOR from the drop down box.
  5. Click on SEARCH.

Journal Searching

To find a specific article:

  1. Click on ARTICLE LOCATOR.
  2. Type the title of the article in the ARTICLE TITLE box.
  3. Type the name of the journal in the JOURNAL: search box
    OR
    Select the name of the journal from the drop down menu.
    (Optional) Type in additional information as desired.
  4. Click on SEARCH.

To browse a specific journal:

  1. Click on BROWSE at the top of the screen.
  2. Click on a discipline from the Browse by Discipline: list.
  3. Click on a specific journal title.
  4. Click on desired issue.

Displaying Search Results

  1. Click on NEXT or PREVIOUS to move through additional records.
  2. Click on the title to display the full text of the article and related links.
  3. Click on PAGE OF FIRST MATCH to find the first page with search terms displayed.

Selecting Records

To select records you must create a MyJSTOR account and login

  1. Click on MyJSTOR and login.
    Note: If you have not already done so, click on Register to create an account.
  2. Click in the box to the left of desired record(s) and click on SAVE CITATION(s)for later printing, saving or emailing.
  3. Click in the box to the left of SELECT/UNSELECT ALL to save all of the records on the page for later printing, saving or emailing.

Saving Search Results

Downloading Selected Records

To save selected records you must create a MyJSTOR account and login

  1. Insert removable storage device. (i.e. flash drive, memory stick, 3 1/2" disk ...)
  2. Click on MyJSTOR and login.
    Note: If you have not already done so, click on Register to create an account.
  3. Select SAVED CITATIONS from the MyJSTOR drop down menu.
  4. Click on SELECT/UNSELECT ALL.
  5. Click on EXPORT ARTICLE CITATIONS.
  6. Click on PRINTER FRIENDLY VERSION to the right of the screen.
  7. Click on your browser's FILE and SAVE AS.
  8. Type the disk drive letter, the filename (up to 8 characters) and .txt in the FILE NAME box.
  9. Example: myfile.txt

  10. Select TEXT DOCUMENT at the SAVE AS TYPE: box.
  11. Click on SAVE.

Emailing Search Results

Emailing Selected Records

To email selected records you must create a MyJSTOR account and login

  1. Click on MyJSTOR and login.
    Note: If you have not already done so, click on Register to create an account.
  2. Select SAVED CITATIONS from the MyJSTOR drop down menu.
  3. Click on SELECT/UNSELECT ALL.
  4. Click on EXPORT ARTICLE CITATIONS.
  5. Click on EMAIL CITATIONS.
  6. Select desired option from the CITATION FORMAT: drop down menu.
    Printer-friendly format is recommended.
  7. Enter your complete email address in both the YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS and the RECIPIENT(S) EMAIL ADDRESS boxes.
  8. Click on SEND.

  1. Click on LOGOUT to the right of the screen.
  2. Click on HOME at the top of the screen to return to the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
