Searching
- Select database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
- Type a word, phrase or name in the COMPANY or KEYWORD search boxes. Use quotation marks around a phrase.
(Optional) Select an industry from the INDUSTRY SEARCH drop-down menu.
(Optional) Limit search by collection, date, geographic location, or contributor. - Click on SEARCH.
Combining Terms
Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.
Example: dell or gateway
Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.
Example: gateway and earnings
Truncating Terms
Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of a search term.
Example:drug* (retrieves drug, drugs, druggist)
Use ? to replace one or more characters within a search term.
Example: wom?n (retrieves woman, women)
Use ! to replace one or no characters at the end of a search term.
Example: product! (retrieves product or products, but not productive)
Proximity Searching
Use quotation marks " " around a phrase.
Example: "household debt"
Use n# to find terms within a specified number(#) of words of each other regardless of the order.
Example: price n2 growth (retrieves price of growth, growth vs. price)
Combining Search Sets
- Click on ADVANCED SEARCH.
- Select --Select Index (optional)-- in the drop-down menu.
- Type search set numbers from HISTORY at the bottom of the screen.
- Click on VIEW at the bottom of screen.
Example: R1 and R2
Author Searching
Authors' names are not standardized. They appear in the database as last name only, as first and last name, and as first initial and last name. For maximum retrieval, search for last name only.
- Type author's last name in KEYWORD SEARCH box.
Example: ottenstein
Contributor Searching
Use CONTRIBUTOR BROWSE to search for organizations that have contributed reports to the database.
- Click on ADVANCED SEARCH.
- Type corporate author name in BY CONTRIBUTOR limit box.
- Click on BROWSE.
- Click in the box to the left of the entry to mark it for searching.
Note: You may select up to ten contributors. - Click on SUBMIT SELECTIONS on the left side of screen.
Note: The BY CONTRIBUTOR box will be filled in with the number of journals selected. - Click on SEARCH.
Company Searching
- Type a word, phrase or name in the COMPANY search box.
- Click on SEARCH.
- Click on VIEW to display the matching list of company records.
Displaying Search Results
A list of records matching the last search is automatically displayed. A Company search retrieves a list of companies.
- Use the SCROLL BAR to move through records on the page.
- Click on RIGHT ARROW or LEFT ARROW to display more entries.
- Click on PDF to display the text of the document.
- Use the SCROLL BAR to move through records on the page.
Selecting Records
- Click in the box to the left of the record to mark it for later printing, saving or emailing.
Printing Search Results
Printing a PDF Article
- Display the PDF document to be printed.
- Click on the PRINTER icon in the PDF document window.
- Click on OK.
Printing Selected Records
- Click on VIEW MARK LIST.
- Select CITATION or ABSTRACT in the BROWSER PRINT box.
- Click on SUBMIT PRINT REQUEST.
- Click on PRINT in the print window.
Saving Search Results
- Insert removable storage device. (i.e. flash drive, memory stick, 3 1/2" disk...)
Saving a PDF Article
- Display the PDF to be saved.
- Click on the SAVE icon in the PDF document window.
- Type the disk drive letter, the filename and extension in the FILE NAME box.
- Click on SAVE.
Saving Selected Records
- Insert removable storage device (i.e. flash drive, memory stick, 3 1/2" disk...).
- Click on VIEW MARK LIST.
- Select CITATION or ABSTRACT in the BROWSER PRINT box.
- Click on SUBMIT PRINT REQUEST.
- Click on CANCEL in the print window.
- Click your browser's FILE menu, then SAVE.
Exporting Search Results to RefWorks
Exporting search results to RefWorks is not available.
Emailing Search Results
Emailing Selected Records
- Click on VIEW MARK LIST.
- Select CITATION or ABSTRACT in the E-MAIL DELIVERY box.
- Enter email address.
(Optional) Enter Subject. - Click on SUBMIT E-MAIL REQUEST.

Beginning a New Search
- Click on SEARCH on the left side of screen.
- Click on CLEAR FORM if necessary.
Getting Help
- Click on HELP for on-screen help.

Exiting
- Click on HOME at the top of the screen to return to the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
