Searching

Note: UW-Madison subscribes only to the full text of the current ASTM standards.

  1. Select the database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
  2. Click on IHS STANDARDS EXPERT.
  3. Type a word or phrase in the KEYWORD(S) OR TEXT box. Use quotation marks around phrases.
    (Optional) Choose the part of the record you want to search: TITLE, ABSTRACT, or ALL DOCUMENT TEXT.
    (Optional) Click in the MY SUBSCRIPTION box under FILTER to limit to ASTM standards available in full text.
  4. Click on SEARCH.

Combining Terms

Words are automatically ANDed. AND connects separate concepts. AND narrows your search.

Example: oil filter (retrieves oil filters, filter for oil, etc)

Truncating Terms

Do not use a truncation symbol. Search terms are automatically stemmed.

Example: filter (retrieves filter, filters)

Proximity Searching

Use quotation marks around a phrase. Automatic stemming does not work if searching by phrase.

Example: "steel gate valve" or "steel gate valves"

Combining Search Sets

Not available.


Number Searching

Click in the DOCUMENT NUMBER box and type all or part of a document number. Use an * at the beginning, middle or end of a number.

Example: Example: astm a19* (retrieves ASTM A192, ASTM A199)

Displaying Search Results

  1. Use the SCROLL BAR to move through records on the page.
  2. Click on left or right arrows at the bottom of the screen to display more records, or enter a new page number.
  3. Click DETAILS to see information about the standard.
  4. Click VIEW to see the pdf of the standard. Then click CLOSE.

Selecting Records

Note: You must register to use these functions.

  1. Click on FAVORITES or WATCH LIST to the right of the title.

Saving Search Results

  1. Click on DOWNLOAD RESULTS.
  2. Type the disk drive letter, the filename, keeping the.csv extension. Your file can be read by programs such as Excel.

Saving Searches

  1. Click on MY ACCOUNT and login.
  2. Click on SAVE SEARCH
  3. Name your search.
  4. Click on SAVE.

Emailing Search Results

Not available. Download your results and email them.

  1. Click on LOG OUT at the top right of the screen to return to the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
