Ask a Librarian

Searching

  1. Select database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
  2. Click on ADVANCED SEARCH.
  3. Type a word or phrase in the ALL FIELDS box.
    (Optional) Click in the box to the left of the desired publication type under SELECT PUBLICATIONS on the right side of the screen.
  4. Click on RUN SEARCH.

Combining Terms

Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.

Example: broadband wireless access or bwa

Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.

Example: bluetooth and patient monitoring

Truncating Terms

Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of a search term.

Example: fiber* (retrieves fiber, fibers, fiberglass)

Use ? to replace a single characters in the middle or at the end of a word.

Example: t?re (retrieves tire, tyre, tore)

Proximity Searching

Use quotation marks to find words next to each other in that order.

Example: "radar system" (does not retrieve radar systems)

Combining Search Sets

  1. Click on VIEW SESSION HISTORY.
  2. Click on the desired SEARCH QUERY numbers and select AND, or OR from the drop down menu.
  3. Click on RUN SEARCH.

Author Searching

  1. Click on AUTHOR SEARCH.
  2. Type in the last name and first initial.
  3. Example: ramanathan p

  4. Click on the desired name.

Publication Browsing

To browse a specific journal, conference proceeding or standard:

  1. Select JOURNALS AND MAGAZINES from the BROWSE menu at the top of the screen.
    (Optional) Select CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS, or STANDARDS.
  2. Type a word or phrase in the box.
    (Optional) Click on the the desired letter of the alphabet.

Full Text Searching

  1. Click on ADVANCED SEARCH.
  2. Select FULL TEXT and ALL FIELDS in the ALL FIELDS menu.
  3. Type a word or phrase.
  4. Use the Adobe Acrobat search feature to find desired terms within the retreived pdf document.

Displaying Search Results

  1. Use the SCROLL BAR to move through records on the page.
  2. Click on ABSTRACT PLUS to see a description of the article and links to related articles.
  3. Click on PDF to display the full text of the article.

Selecting Records

  1. Click in the box to the left of the record to mark it for later printing, downloading or emailing.

Saving Search Results

  1. Click on VIEW SELECTED items.
  2. Select file format on the left side of the screen.
  3. Click on the GO icon.

Exporting Search Results to RefWorks

Emailing Search Results

Emailing Selected Records

  1. Click on VIEW SELECTED items.
  2. Click on EMAIL at the top of the screen.
  3. Enter your name, email and recipients email.
  4. Click on SEND.

Beginning a New Search, Getting Help, and Exiting

Beginning a New Search

  1. Select SEARCH then ADVANCED at the top of the screen.
    (Optional) Click in the MODIFY SEARCH box at the top of the results screen.
    (Optional) Click in the box to search only within the results set.

Getting Help

  1. Click on HELP for on-screen help.

For further assistance, consult library staff.

Exiting

  1. Click on LOGOUT.
