Setting Preferences

  1. Go to Google Scholar.
    (Optional) Go to Google Scholar through the the UW-Madison Libraries Web site, and don't worry about the settings.
  2. Click on SCHOLAR PREFERENCES to the right of the search box. Select preferred default settings.
  3. Type madison in the LIBRARY LINKS box and click on FIND LIBRARY. Select University of Wisconsin-Madison (Find It at UW Madison) to enable access to materials licensed by the University Libraries.
  4. Scroll down to BIBLIOGRAPHY MANAGER
  5. Click in the circle next to SHOW LINKS TO IMPORT CITATIONS INTO and select REFWORKS.
  6. Click on SAVE PREFERENCES.

Searching

  1. Click on ADVANCED SCHOLAR SEARCH for more precise searching.
  2. Enter search terms in your preferred FIND ARTICLES search box.
    (Optional) Select IN THE TITLE OF THE ARTICLE from the WHERE MY WORDS OCCUR drop-down menu to increase the relevance of your search results.
    (Optional) Enter desired date range in the RETURN ARTICLES PUBLISHED BETWEEN boxes.
    (Optional) Select target subject areas.
  3. Click on SEARCH SCHOLAR.

Combining Terms

Use WITH AT LEAST ONE OF THE WORDS search box to connect similar terms. This will broaden your search to retrieve articles containing any of the words. In this type of search, do not connect words with OR.

Example: Clemens Twain (retrieves documents containing Clemens or Twain.

Use WITH ALL OF THE WORDS search box to connect separate concepts. This will narrow your search to retrieve only articles containing all of the words. In this type of search, do not connect words with AND.

Example: birds wisconsin (retrieves birds and wisconsin).

Truncating Terms

Google Scholar automatically searches for the simple plural of a search term. Google Scholar does not automatically retrieve all variations of a term.

Example: teen (retrieves teen and teens but not teenager)

Proximity Searching

Use quotations marks around phrases.

Example: "teenage wasteland"

Note: Quotation marks around the phrase will not work in the WITH AT LEAST ONE OF THE WORDS search box.

Journal Searching

To find a specific article:

  1. Click on ADVANCED SCHOLAR SEARCH.
  2. Type article title or keywords in your preferred FIND ARTICLES box.
  3. Type the journal title or part of the title in the PUBLICATION box.
    (Optional) Fill in DATE boxes to limit your search by publication year.
  4. Click on SEARCH SCHOLAR.

Displaying Search Results

  1. Use the SCROLL BAR to move through records on the page.
  2. Click on another page number or NEXT to display more records.
  3. Click on FIND IT AT UW MADISON to locate the item electronically, on campus, or to request document delivery.
    (Optional) Click on link to ALL VERSIONS to find preprints, abstracts, conference papers, or other iterations of the article.
