Ask a Librarian

Searching

  1. Select database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
  2. Type a word, phrase, or name in the SEARCH box.
  3. Click on SEARCH.

Combining Terms

Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.

Example: hispanic or latino

Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.

Example: race and culture

Truncating Terms

Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of a search term.

Example: drug* (retrieves drug, drugs, druggist)

Use ? to replace one character within a search term

Example: wom?n (retrieves woman, women)

Proximity Searching

Use n# to find terms within a specified number (#) of words of each other regardless of the order.

Example: white n2 constance (retrieves White, Helen Constance, Glenn, Constance White)

Journal Searching

Available in Health and Wellness Resource Center.

  1. Click on ADVANCED SEARCH.
  2. Type a journal title in the SEARCH box and change the default from Keyword to SOURCE TITLE using the drop-down menu.
    Note: To search for a one word title, type the journal title in quotation marks.

    Example:  "diabetes"

    (Optional) Type the title of the article or a subject keyword in the second search box.
    (Optional) Under Date of Publication use the drop-down menus to limit your search to publication month and year.
  3. Click on SEARCH.

Displaying Search Results

Records matching the last search are automatically displayed.

  1. Use the SCROLL BAR to move through records on the page.
  2. Click on another page number or RIGHT ARROW or LEFT ARROW to display more records.
  3. Click on an entry to display the full text of the entry.
  4. Click on CURRENT RESULTS or on RESULTS LIST to return to the list of results.

Selecting Records

  1. Click in the box next to the title in the list of results.
  2. Click on UPDATE MARK LIST.
  3. Click on VIEW MARK LIST to display the list of selected records.

Saving Search Results

  1. Display record to be saved.
  2. Insert a removable storage device (e.g. flash drive, memory stick, 3-1/2" disk ...).
  3. Click on FILE at the top of the window and select SAVE AS.
  4. Type the disk drive letter, the filename, and the extension in the FILE NAME box

    Example:  a:myfile.txt
    Example:  a:myfile.html

  5. Click on SAVE.

Emailing Search Results

  1. Display record to be emailed.
  2. Click on EMAIL icon.
  3. Type your email address in the MAIL TO box.
  4. Click on SEND.
  5. Click on BACK to return to previous screen.

Beginning a New Search, Getting Help, and Exiting

Beginning a New Search

  1. Click on REVISE SEARCH.
    (Optional) Click in the search box below the name of the database.
  2. Click on CLEAR FORM to delete the previous search.

Getting Help

  1. Click on HELP for on-screen help.

For further assistance, consult library staff.

Exiting

  1. Click on the HOME icon at the top left of the screen to return to the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
