Ask a Librarian

Searching

  1. Select database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
  2. Type a word or phrase in the SEARCH box. Use quotation marks around phrases.
    (Optional) Change SEACH TITLE, SORT OPTION, AVAILABLE DATABASES and DATE RANGE defaults as desired.
  3. Click on GO.

Combining Terms

Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.

Example: teacher or instructor

Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.

Example: "school vouchers" and Wisconsin

Truncating Terms

Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of a search term.

Example: teach* (retrieves teach, teacher, teaching)

Use * to replace one character within a search term

Example: wom*n (retrieves woman, women)

Proximity Searching

Use quotation marks around phrases.

Example: "school vouchers"

Combining Search Sets

Displaying Search Results

  1. Use the SCROLL BAR to move through records on the page.
  2. Click on another page number or NEXT PAGE to display more records.
  3. Click on title of article to display the text of the article.
  4. Use the browser's BACK command to return to search results.

Selecting Records

Selecting articles for later printing, saving, or emailing is not available.

Saving Search Results

  1. Display the article to be saved.
  2. Click on PRINT/CITATION icon in the upper right corner of the window.
  3. Insert a removable storage device (e.g. flash drive, memory stick, 3-1/2" disk ...).
  4. Click on FILE at the top of the window and select SAVE AS.
  5. Type the disk drive letter, the filename, and the extension in the FILE NAME box

    Example:  a:myfile.txt
    Example: a:myfile.html

  6. Click on SAVE.
  7. Use the browser's BACK command to return to the previous screen.

Exporting Search Results to RefWorks

Emailing Search Results

  1. Display the article to be emailed.
  2. Click on the EMAIL icon in the upper right corner of the window.
  3. Type your email address in the TO ADDRESS box.
    (Optional) Add information to the MESSAGE box.
  4. Click on SEND.
  5. Click on CLOSE WINDOW.

Beginning a New Search, Getting Help, and Exiting

Beginning a New Search

  1. Click on BACK to return to modify search.
  2. Click on HOME icon in upper right corner of screen to being a new search.

Getting Help

  1. Click on HELP for on-screen help.

For further assistance, consult library staff.

Exiting

  1. Click on the HOME icon in the upper left of the screen to return to the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
