Searching
- Select database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
- Type a word or phrase in the SEARCH box. Use quotation
marks around phrases.
(Optional) Change SEACH TITLE, SORT OPTION, AVAILABLE DATABASES and DATE RANGE defaults as desired. - Click on GO.
Combining Terms
Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.
Example: teacher or instructor
Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.
Example: "school vouchers" and Wisconsin
Truncating Terms
Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of a search term.
Example: teach* (retrieves teach, teacher, teaching)
Use * to replace one character within a search term
Example: wom*n (retrieves woman, women)
Proximity Searching
Use quotation marks around phrases.
Example: "school vouchers"

Displaying Search Results
- Use the SCROLL BAR to move through records on the page.
- Click on another page number or NEXT PAGE to display more records.
- Click on title of article to display the text of the article.
- Use the browser's BACK command to return to search results.
Selecting Records
Selecting articles for later printing, saving, or emailing is not available.
Printing Search Results
- Display the article to be printed.
- Click on the PRINT/CITATION icon in the upper right corner of the window.
- Click on your browser's FILE menu and select PRINT.
- Click on the PRINT button.
- Click on BACK to return to the article.
Saving Search Results
- Display the article to be saved.
- Click on PRINT/CITATION icon in the upper right corner of the window.
- Insert a removable storage device (e.g. flash drive, memory stick, 3-1/2" disk ...).
- Click on FILE at the top of the window and select SAVE AS.
- Type the disk drive letter, the filename, and the extension in the
FILE NAME box
Example: a:myfile.txt
Example: a:myfile.html - Click on SAVE.
- Use the browser's BACK command to return to the previous screen.

Emailing Search Results
- Display the article to be emailed.
- Click on the EMAIL icon in the upper right corner of the window.
- Type your email address in the TO ADDRESS box.
(Optional) Add information to the MESSAGE box. - Click on SEND.
- Click on CLOSE WINDOW.

- Click on BACK to return to modify search.
- Click on HOME icon in upper right corner of screen to being a new search.

- Click on HELP for on-screen help.
For further assistance, consult library staff.
Exiting
- Click on the HOME icon in the upper left of the screen to return to the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
