Ask a Librarian

Searching

  1. Select database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
  2. Type a word or phrase in the SEARCH box.
    (Optional) Click box next to SEARCH TITLE TEXT ONLY.
    (Optional) Click box next to BY RELEVANCE RANK.
    (Optional) Use drop-down menus to restrict search to a particular date range.
  3. Click GO.

Combining Terms

Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.

Example: election or campaign

Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.

Example: election and canada

Truncating Terms

Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of a search term.

Example: teach* (retrieves teach, teacher, teaching)

Proximity Searching

Use quotation marks around phrases.

Example: "school vouchers"

Displaying Search Results

  1. Move through records on the page.
    (Optional) Click tab to select news digest articles, breaking news, analysis & background, or reference information.
  2. Click NEXT to display more records.
  3. Click title of article to display the text of the article.
    (Optional) While viewing article, click on underlined words in the text to view more information on the topic.
  4. Use the browser's BACK button to return to search results.

Selecting Records

Selecting articles for later printing, saving, or emailing is not available.

Saving Search Results

  1. Display the article to be saved.
  2. Click printer icon in the upper right.
  3. Use the browser save function.
    Note: Save file as type Web Page.
  4. Click browser's BACK button to return to article.

Exporting Search Results to RefWorks

Emailing Search Results

  1. Display the article to be emailed.
  2. Click envelope icon in the upper right.
  3. Type email address in the TO ADDRESS box.
    (Optional) Add information to the MESSAGE box.
  4. Click SEND.
  5. Click CLOSE WINDOW.
  6. Click browser's BACK button to return to article.

  1. Click question mark icon in upper right for on-screen help.

For further assistance, consult library staff.

  1. Close the browser window.
