Searching

  1. Select the database from the menu on the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
  2. Click on ADVANCED SEARCH on the left side of the screen.
  3. Type a word or phrase in the SEARCH box. The full text of all handbooks will be searched.
    (Optional) Click on UNSELECT ALL and select desired titles.
  4. Click on SEARCH.

Combining Terms

Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.

Example: manufacturing or production

Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.

Example: asphalt and recycle

Combining sets in not available.

Truncating Terms

Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of a search term.

Example: turbine* (retrieves turbine, turbines)

Proximity Searching

Use w/# to find terms within a specified number (#) of words of one another, regardless of the order in which they appear.

Example: risk w/5 management

Author Searching

Author searching is not available.

Displaying Search Results

Titles and book sections are automatically displayed. The most relevant sections are listed first.

  1. Use the scroll bar to move through results.
  2. Click on the section title under DOCUMENT to retrieve the section which includes your search terms.
    (Optional) Click on the title under BOOK TITLE to browse the book.

Selecting Records

Selecting sections for later printing, downloading, or emailing is not available.

Saving Search Results

To download a section from a book you must be viewing the book.

  1. Insert a formatted disk into a floppy drive.
  2. Click on the disk icon at the top of the screen.
  3. Type the disk drive, filename and extension in the filename box.
  4. Example:a:myfile.pdf

  5. Click on SAVE to begin downloading.

Emailing Search Results

To email a section from a book you must be viewing the book.

  1. Click on FILE at the top of the screen and select SEND LINK.
  2. Type the complete email address.
  3. Click on SEND.
    (Optional) Download the section using the downloading instructions, and send the file as an email attachment.

  1. Click on HELP for on-screen help.

For further assistance, consult library staff.

Exiting

  1. Click on the browser's HOME at the top of the screen to return to the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
