Searching

  1. Select database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
  2. Click on ADVANCED SEARCH.
  3. Type a word or phrase in the KEYWORD box.
  4. Click on SEARCH.

Combining Terms

You must use quotation marks around the individual terms.

Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.

Example: "glasnost" or "perestroika"

Use AND to separate concepts. AND narrows your search.

Example: "ukraine" and "literature"

Truncating Terms

You must use quotation marks around the individual terms.

Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of a search term.

Example: "stalin*" (retrieves stalin, stalinism, stalingrad)

Proximity Searching

Quotation marks around phrases are not necessary.

Combining Search Sets

Author Searching

  1. Click on ADVANCED SEARCH.
  2. Type the author's first name and/or author's last name in the appropriate search box.
  3. (Optional) Click CHECK SPELLING and choose correct spelling from list on right side of the screen.
  4. Click on SEARCH.

Journal Searching

To find a specific article or to browse a specific journal:

  1. Click on PERIODICALS.
  2. Type journal name in the SEARCH FOR PERIODICALS box.
  3. Click on desired journal name.
  4. Select a desired year.
  5. Click on VIEW ARTICLES for desired issue.
  6. Click on VIEW for desired article title.

Displaying Search Results

  1. Use the scroll bar to move through records on the page.
  2. Click on page numbers to display more results.
  3. Click on VIEW to display a PDF the full text of the article.
  4. Close the PDF window to return to the list of records.

If the record is an e-book or a book chapter, search MadCat separately for a library copy of the book. ADD TO E-CART requires payment by personal credit card.

Downloading Search Results

  1. Display a PDF to be downloaded.
  2. Insert a disk into the disk drive.
  3. Click on SAVE A COPY at the top of the PDF window.
  4. Type your disk drive, filename and .pdf extension in the FILE NAME box.

    Example: a:myfile.pdf

  5. Click on OK to begin downloading.

Note: The PDF does not include the citation information for the article.

Emailing Search Results

  1. Follow instructions above for downloading .
  2. Attach PDF to e-mail message .

Beginning a New Search

  1. Click on CLEAR on the search screen and enter new search terms.

Exiting

  1. Close browser window .

  1. Click on HELP for on-screen help.
