Ask a Librarian

Searching

  1. Select database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
  2. Click on ADVANCED SEARCH.
  3. Type a word or phrase in the SEARCH FOR box(es).
  4. Click on SEARCH.

Combining Terms

  1. Type the first word(s) in the SEARCH FOR box.
  2. Click in the drop down menu to the right and select OR or AND.
  3. Type additional words in the next SEARCH FOR box.
    (Optional) Change SEARCH ON box(es).
  4. Click on SEARCH.

Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.

Example: movies or films

Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.

Example: movies and history

Truncating Terms

Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of or within a search term.

Example: advertis* (retrieves advertise, advertiser, advertisement)
Example: wom*n (retrieves woman, women)

Proximity Searching

Not Available

Combining Search Sets

  1. Click on SEARCH HISTORY.
  2. Click in the box to the left of the desired search sets to combine.
  3. Click on COMBINE SEARCH.

Author Searching

Author searching is not available in Ulrich's.

  1. Click on BROWSE.
  2. Click on AUTHOR.
  3. Type the author's name.

    Example: morrison, toni
    Example: morrison, t

  4. Click on GO.
  5. Select desired author(s).
  6. Click on VIEW SELECTED ITEMS.

Displaying Search Results

  1. Use the scroll bar to move through records on the page.
  2. Click on NEXT PAGE or PREVIOUS PAGE to move to the next or previous set of records.
  3. Click on the underlined title of a document to display the full record.
  4. Click on BACK TO RESULTS to return to the list of records.

Selecting Records

  1. Click in the box to the left of the record to mark it for later printing, downloading or emailing.

Downloading Search Results

  1. Insert a disk into a drive.
  2. Click on DOWNLOAD at the top or bottom of the screen.
  3. Click in the circle next to STANDARD DOWNLOAD and click GO, if needed
  4. Click in the circle next to desired format.
  5. Click in the RECORD FORMAT drop down box and select a record format.
    (Optional) Click in the box(es) to the left of the options under ADDITONAL INFORMATION TO INLCUDE.
  6. Click on GO.
  7. Click on SAVE.
  8. Type your disk drive, filename and extension in the FILE NAME box.

    Example: a:myfile.txt

  9. Click on SAVE.

Emailing Search Results

  1. Select record(s) to be emailed.
  2. Click on EMAIL at the top or bottom of the screen.
  3. Click in the RECORD FORMAT drop down box and select a record format.
    (Optional) Click in the box(es) to the left of the options under ADDITONAL INFORMATION TO INLCUDE.
  4. Type in email address in the EMAIL ADDRESS OF RECIPIENT box.
  5. Click on GO.
  6. Click on CLOSE THIS WINDOW to return to the search results or click on one of the buttons to return to search interface.

Beginning a New Search

  1. Click on NEW SEARCH.

Exiting

  1. Click on LOG OUT at the top of the screen to return to the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.

Getting Help

  1. Click on HELP for on-screen help.
