Ask a Librarian

Searching

  1. Select database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
  2. Click in the search box. Type in a word or phrase.
    (Optional) Check the box to the left of ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA to limit your search to articles in the Encyclopedia.
  3. Click on GO or press ENTER.

Combining Terms

Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.

Example: gymnastics or acrobatics

Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.

Example:  gymnasts and olympics

Truncating Terms

Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of a search term.

Example: gymnast*  (retrieves gymnast, gymnasts, gymnastics)

Proximity Searching

Use quotation marks around phrases.

Example: "international olympic committee"

Combining Search Sets

Displaying Search Results

Article titles and the first few sentences of articles are automatically displayed. The more relevant articles are listed first.

  1. Use the SCROLL BAR to move through records on the page.
  2. Click on MORE ARTICLES, NEXT or PREV to display more records.
  3. Click on title of article to display the article.
    (Optional) While viewing article, click on underlined words in the text to view more information on the topic.
    (Optional) Click on INDEX ENTRY at the top of the article, if available, to view related articles.
  4. Click on BACK to return to the list of titles.

Selecting Records

Selecting articles for later printing, saving, exporting, or emailing is not available.

Saving Search Results

Article must be displayed on the screen at the time of saving.

  1. Click on PRINT ARTICLE at the top of the article.
    (Optional) If only a portion of the article is needed, use PREVIOUS and/or NEXT to locate the desired section. Click on PRINT PAGE to save a single page of the encyclopedia entry.
  2. Insert a removable storage device (e.g. flash drive, memory stick, 3-1/2" disk ...).
  3. Click on FILE at the top of the window and select SAVE AS.
  4. Type the disk drive letter, the filename, and the extension in the FILE NAME box

    Example:   a:myfile.txt
    Example: a:myfile.html

  5. Click on SAVE.

Emailing Search Results

Article must be displayed on the screen at the time of emailing.

  1. Click on E-MAIL ARTICLE at the top of the article.
  2. Type your email address in the SEND TO box.
    (Optional) Fill in the other boxes.
  3. Click on SUBMIT.

Beginning a New Search

  1. Click in the search box in the navigation bar at the top of the article.
  2. (Optional) From the pull-down menu in the Search Again box select ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA to limit your search to articles in the Encyclopedia. Or, click on HOME on the Britannica banner.

Getting Help

  1. Click on HELP for on-screen help.

For further assistance, consult library staff.

Exiting

  1. Click on the browser's HOME icon at the top of the screen to return to the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
