Ask a Librarian

Searching

  1. Select database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
  2. Type a word or phrase in the KEYWORDS/PHRASES box.
  3. Press ENTER or click on SEARCH.

Combining Terms

Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.

Example: ocean or sea

Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.

Example: welfare and wisconsin

If using AND and OR in the same search statement, put the OR terms in parentheses.

Example: (reptile or amphibian) and (pesticide or insecticide)

Truncating Terms

Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of or within a search term.

Example: comput* (retrieves computer, computers, computing)

Use ? to replace one character..

Example: comput? (retrieves compute, but not computer)

Proximity Searching

Use Near# to find terms within a specified number(#) of words of one another regardless of the order in which they appear.

Example: "organic near3 farming" (retrieves organic farming, organic vegetable farming, farming using the organic method)

Author Searching

  1. Click in the AUTHOR search box and type the author's last name and first initial.
  2. Example: holt c

  3. Click on INDEX on the right side of the screen.
  4. Click in the box next to each desired name.
  5. Click on ADD TO SEARCH FIELD.
  6. Click on SEARCH.

Journal Searching

To find a specific article:

  1. Type the name of the article in the TITLE box.
  2. Click on SEARCH.

To browse a specific journal:

  1. Click in the PERIODICAL NAMES [ONLY] box and type the journal name or click on INDEX and choose from the list of displayed journal titles.
  2. Click on SEARCH.

Displaying Search Results

  1. Click on NEXT to move to the next record or set of records. Click on PREV to move to the previous record or set of records.
  2. Click on VIEW DATABASE RECORD to view full record.
  3. Click on Find It to find electronic or print copies of this item on campus.

Selecting Records

Marked records must be printed, saved, or emailed before conducting a new search or they will be lost.

  1. Click in the box next to each desired record for later printing, saving or emailing.

Saving Search Results

  1. Insert removable storage device. (i.e. flash drive, memory stick, 3 1/2" disk ...)
  2. Click on OUTPUT.
  3. Select desired options from the screen.
  4. Click on SAVE AS TEXT.
  5. Type the disk drive letter, the filename (up to 8 characters) and .txt in the FILE NAME box.
  6. Example: a:myfile.txt

  7. Follow directions on the screen to begin downloading.

Emailing Search Results

Only marked records may be emailed

  1. Click on OUTPUT.
  2. Click in circle next to desired format.
  3. Click on EMAIL.
  4. Click in the EMAIL TO box and type the email address.
  5. Click on EMAIL ALL MARKED RECORDS.

Beginning a New Search

  1. Click on SEARCH.
  2. Click on CLEAR SEARCH.

Exiting

  1. Click on LOGOUT.
  2. Click on EXIT.
  3. Click on HOME at the top of the screen to return to the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.

  • Click on HELP for on-screen help.
