Ask a Librarian

Getting Started

  1. Select database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
  2. Click on GO to ENTER THE ARTstor DIGITAL LIBRARY .
  3. Disable browser's pop-up blocker or set it to accept pop-up windows from http://www.artstor.org.

Searching

  1. Click on ADVANCED SEARCH in toolbar at top of screen.
  2. Select ADVANCED SEARCH from drop-down menu.
  3. Click in the SEARCH FOR WORDS OR PHRASES box. Type a word or phrase. Use quotation marks around phrases.
  4. Select desired option from the IN ANY FIELD drop-down menu.
    (Optional) Select desired filters: COLLECTIONS, OBJECT CLASSIFICATION, and/or GEOGRAPHY and enter dates under SEARCH BY DATE OR DATE RANGE.
  5. Click on SEARCH.

Combining Terms

Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.

Example: Monet or Renoir

Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.

Example: Monet and lilies

Truncating Terms

Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of a search term.

Example: ren* (retrieves Renoir and Renaissance)

Use _ to replace one character with a search term

Example: m_net (retrieves Monet, Manet)

Proximity Searching

Use quotation marks " " around phrase.

Example: "internet policy"

Combining Search Sets

Creator Searching

  1. Click in the search box. Type the author's name.
  2. Example: claude monet

  3. Select IN CREATOR ONLY from ANY FIELD drop-down menu.
  4. Click SEARCH.

Displaying Search Results

Displaying Images

Images display as thumbnails. To change display:

  1. Select DISPLAY IMAGES IN LIST MODE under VIEW drop-down menu in toolbar at top of screen to change display.
    (Optional) Select DISPLAY IMAGES IN THUMBNAIL MODE under VIEW drop-down menu in toolbar at top of screen to change display again.

To display an image:

  1. Double-click on the thumbnail to view an image in the Image Viewer. The image appears in a new window. The Image Viewer provides tools for zooming, panning, downloading, and printing.
    (Optional) Double-click on another thumbnail to view two images side-by-side for comparisons. The image appears in a new window.

Viewing Descriptive Information

  1. Single-click on the caption beneath the thumbnail to view the descriptive information for an image.

Selecting Records

Image citations may be selected for later printing, saving, e-mailing, and exporting. Single-click on the thumbnail to select an image. The thumbnail is outlined by yellow line when selected.

Saving Search Results

Saving Images

  1. Click the disk icon in the Image Viewer to save an image as JPEG file (400 or 1024 pixels). Data about the image is also saved as an HTML file.

Saving Selected Image Citations

  1. Single-click on the thumbnail to select an image.
  2. Select SAVE SELECTED IMAGES AS CITATIONS from IMAGE GROUPS drop-down menu in toolbar.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Select VIEW SAVED CITATIONS from VIEW drop-down menu.
  5. Choose desired option from EXPORT FORMAT drop-down menu next to VIEW AND SAVE CITATIONS under EXPORT OPTIONS.
  6. Click VIEW.
  7. Select SAVE TO DISK and click OK.
  8. Type the disk drive letter,the filename and the extension in the FILE NAME box.

    Example: a: myfile.TXT

  9. Click on SAVE.

Emailing Search Results

Emailing Selected Image Citations

  1. Single-click on the thumbnail to select an image.
  2. Select SAVE SELECTED IMAGES AS CITATIONS from IMAGE GROUPS drop-down menu.
  3. Select VIEW SAVED CITATIONS from VIEW drop-down menu.
  4. Click on E-MAIL CITATIONS under EXPORT OPTIONS.
  5. Select CITATION FORMAT.
  6. Enter YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS.
  7. Enter RECIPIENT(S) ADDRESS.
  8. (Optional) Enter subject and optional notes.

  9. Click SEND.

Beginning a New Search

  1. Click on ADVANCED SEARCH in toolbar at top of screen.
  2. Select ADVANCED SEARCH from drop-down menu.

Getting Help

  1. Click on HELP in toolbar at the top right of the screen for on-screen help.

For further assistance, consult library staff.

Exiting

  1. Click on EXIT in toolbar at the top right of the screen.
