Getting Started
- Select database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
- Click GO to ENTER THE ARTstor DIGITAL LIBRARY.
- Disable browser's pop-up blocker or set it to accept pop-up windows from http://www.artstor.org.
Searching
- Click FIND in toolbar at top of screen.
- Select ADVANCED SEARCH from drop-down menu.
- Click in the SEARCH FOR WORDS OR PHRASES box. Type a word or phrase. Use quotation marks around phrases.
- Select desired option from the IN ANY FIELD drop-down menu.
(Optional) Select desired filters: GEOGRAPHY, CLASSIFICATION, and/or COLLECTIONS and enter dates under SEARCH BY DATE OR DATE RANGE. - Click SEARCH.
Combining Terms
Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.
Example: Monet or Renoir
Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.
Example: Monet and lilies
Truncating Terms
Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of a search term.
Example: ren* (retrieves Renoir and Renaissance)
Use _ to replace one character with a search term
Example: m_net (retrieves Monet, Manet)
Proximity Searching
Use quotation marks " " around phrase.
Example: "graphic design"
Combining Search Sets

Creator Searching
- Click in the search box. Type the author's name.
- Select IN CREATOR ONLY from IN ANY FIELD drop-down menu.
- Click SEARCH.

Displaying Search Results
Displaying Images
Images display as thumbnails. To change display:
- Select DISPLAY LARGE THUMBNAILS under DISPLAY OPTIONS drop-down menu in toolbar at top of screen to change display.
(Optional) Select DISPLAY SMALL THUMBNAILS under DISPLAY OPTIONS drop-down menu in toolbar at top of screen to change display again.
To display an image:
- Double-click the thumbnail to view an image in the Image Viewer. The image appears in a new window. The Image Viewer provides tools for zooming, panning, downloading, and printing.
(Optional) Double-click another thumbnail to view two images side-by-side for comparisons. The image appears in a new window.
Viewing Descriptive Information
- Single-click the caption beneath the thumbnail to view the descriptive information for an image.
Selecting Records
Image citations may be selected for later printing, saving, e-mailing, and exporting. Single-click on the thumbnail to select an image. The thumbnail is outlined by orange line when selected.
Printing Search Results
Printing Images
- Click the printer icon in the Image Viewer to print an image. Printout will include image as well as data and copyright statement.
Printing Selected Image Citations
- Single-click the thumbnail to select an image.
- Select SAVE CITATIONS FOR SELECTED IMAGES from TOOLS drop-down menu in toolbar.
- Select VIEW AND EXPORT CITATIONS from TOOLS drop-down menu.
- Choose IN PRINTER-FRIENDLY from SELECT A FORMAT drop-down menu next to VIEW AND SAVE CITATIONS under EXPORT OPTIONS.
- Click in circle next to SAVE FILE and click OK.
- Type the disk drive letter, filename and the extension in the FILE NAME box.
Example: e: myfile.HTML
- Click SAVE.
- Open saved file.
- Use the browser print function .
Saving Search Results
Saving Images
- Click the disk icon in the Image Viewer to save an image as JPEG file (400 or 1024 pixels). Data about the image is also saved as an HTML file.
Saving Selected Image Citations
- Single-click the thumbnail to select an image.
- Select SAVE CITATIONS FOR SELECTED IMAGES from TOOLS drop-down menu in toolbar.
- Select VIEW AND EXPORT CITATIONS from TOOLS drop-down menu.
- Choose desired option from SELECT A FORMAT drop-down menu next to VIEW AND SAVE CITATIONS under EXPORT OPTIONS.
- Select SAVE FILE and click OK.
- Type the disk drive letter,the filename and the extension in the FILE NAME box.
Example: e: myfile.TXT
- Click SAVE.

- Single-click on the thumbnail to select an image.
- Select SAVE CITATIONS FOR SELECTED IMAGES from TOOLS drop-down menu.
- Select VIEW AND EXPORT CITATIONS from TOOLS drop-down menu in toolbar.
- Click E-MAIL CITATIONS under EXPORT OPTIONS.
- Select desired option from EXPORT FORMAT drop-down menu next to CITATION FORMAT.
- Enter YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS.
- Enter RECIPIENT(S) ADDRESS.
- Click SEND.
(Optional) Enter subject and optional notes.
