Link to Websites
Note: There is a difference between the Open URL and OpenURL Link commands. Open URL will launch a Web browser and take you to the website or file whose path appears in the URL field. OpenURL Link connects to an OpenURL standard syntax server (Find It at UW-Madison) to display the full text article (if available).- Open a reference in your EndNote Library
- Click in the URL field.
- Type the direct URL including the http://
- Additional URLs may be added, each on a separate line.
To open a URL:
- Click References.
- Click URL.
- Click Open URL.
Link to PDFs
When linking to PDFs or other file types, you can either choose to link out to that file or to insert a copy of the file within your EndNote Library Data/PDF folder. Linking out would oblige you to copy all related files when moving your EndNote library to another computer. Inserting a copy of the file within EndNote means that all linked PDFs travel with your EndNote library when the library and associated Data folder are moved from computer to computer.
Setting File Attachment preferences
- Click Edit, then click Preferences.
- Click URLS & Links on the left menu.
- Check Copy new file attachments to the default file attachment folder and create a relative link if you wish to insert a copy of the file within your EndNote Library Data/PDF folder.
Linking a File to the File Attachment Field
- Select a reference in the Library window or open the reference.
- From the References menu, choose File Attachment, then click Attach File.
- Select a file to link to the selected (or open) reference.
Note the check box along the bottom of the window labeled Copy this file to the default file attachment folder and create a relative link. This gives you the option to:- Select the check box to copy the original PDF file and place the copy in the Data\PDF folder that is part of your EndNote library, or
- Deselect the check box to always have EndNote look in the original location for the inserted file.
- Click Open.
EndNote will display an icon indicating the type of file inserted. You can insert approximately 45 files into the same File Attachments field.
Alternatively, drag and drop the file onto the reference in either the Library window or the Reference window. Whether the file is saved with the database or is linked with an absolute path is determined by the file attachment preference setting.
Link to Graphics and Files
Attach Figure permits you to attach images, charts and figures to your record. Only one graphic or file attachment is permitted in the Figure field. If you insert a second graphic or file, it will replace the first one.
- Open the reference.
- From the References menu, choose Figure, then click Attach Figure.
- Select a file to link to the open reference. This item will be inserted into the Data folder of your library and travel along with that library.
Hint: Use Cite While You Write to insert the figure into a WORD document.
Link to FindIt
Using the OpenURL Link feature of EndNote
The OpenURL Link can be enabled to connect to
to find the full-text reference. Find It provides links from a citation to the full text of that article, if available. The OpenURL path must be enabled in EndNote.
Note: This is not to be confused with the Open URL command found on the References menu. Use Open URL command to look specifically in the URL field or File Attachments field of an EndNote record to open the Internet site or linked file.
