Ask a Librarian

Register

  1. Click on SDI in upper right corner.
  2. Click on NEW USER.
  3. Type your UW email address as the Personal User Name
  4. Type your password twice. Be sure to remember it as they don't email you lost passwords.
  5. Click OK.

Log In

  1. Click on SDI in upper right corner.
  2. Follow screen directions and click OK.

Saved Searches

Save Search History (to rerun later)

  1. Click on SEARCH HISTORY tab.
  2. Click on SAVE (DISK) ICON. May need to maximize screen to find disk icon on far right of Search History screen
  3. Log In if not already logged in.
  4. Type a description of your search history in SEARCH HISTORY NAME box.
  5. Use drop down menus to specify expiration date.
  6. Click OK.

Use Saved Search History

  1. Click on SEARCH HISTORY tab.
  2. Click on FOLDER ICON on far right of screen.
  3. Log In if not already logged in.
  4. Select a Search Name.
  5. Click on LOAD HISTORY at bottom of screen.
  6. Click on DISPLAY by desired search. Newest results display first.

Modify Saved Search History

  1. Click on SEARCH HISTORY tab
  2. Click on FOLDER ICON.
  3. Select a Search Name.
  4. Click on DELETE or CHANGE NAME/DATE to change search name or expiration date.

Email Alerts

  1. Click on SEARCH HISTORY.
  2. Click on ENVELOPE ICON beneath Create SDI column for desired search.
  3. Log In.
  4. Type a name in the SDI NAME box.
  5. Type a year in the ONLY INCLUDE RECORDS PUBLISHED SINCE box.
  6. Example: 2005
  7. Click NOTIFY BEFORE EXPIRATION box.
  8. Type full email address in EMAIL ADDRESSES box (up to 25).
  9. Click ONLY SEND EMAIL IF NEW RESULTS box.
  10. Type a search name in COMMENTS box.
  11. Click USE COMMENTS AS MAIL SUBJECT box.
  12. Fill out choices under INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION.
  13. The Find It URL links automatically come in email messages when DEFAULT, DISPLAYED, or COMPLETE RECORD are selected from dropdown menu. (Results do not come with Citation or Citation and Abstract choices.)
  14. If selecting SPECIFIC FIELDS to send, include the LINKS TO LIBRARY HOLDINGS (WEBLH) field to get Find-It URL links.
  15. Change DISPLAY FIELDS WITH to SHORT LABELS if going to put results into RefWorks or EndNote.
  16. Click OK.

Modify Email Alerts

  1. Click on SDI.
  2. Select desired Search Name.
  3. Click on DELETE or on EDIT to make changes.

RefWorks and EndNote

References import only when FIELD NAMES WITH SHORT LABELS are in records. For more information see RefWorks or Endnote help.
