Ask a Librarian

Register

  1. Click on REGISTER in the My NCBI box at the right of the screen..
  2. Follow the instructions to enter a username, password and security question. (Optional) Enter an email address to be used for automatic email updates and the "Send to Email" feature in PubMed.
  3. Click REGISTER.
  4. Check your email account for a confirmation from My NCBI. You must follow the directions in this message for email alerts to function. Note: Some junk mail filtering programs interpret the initial email from NCBI as spam. If you haven't received your confirmation within an hour, check your junk mail folder.

Customize Output for Find It

  1. If you wish to view the UW Find It button in your emailed results, click on MyNCBI at the top right of the screen.
  2. Click on OUTSIDE TOOL in the left bar.
  3. Click on U in the alphabet list.
  4. Click on the button to the left of UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON: FIND IT.

Log In

  1. Click on SIGN IN in the My NCBI box at the top right of the screen.
  2. Enter your username and password.
  3. Click on SIGN IN.

RSS Feeds

  1. Perform a search.
  2. From the SEND TO drop-down box, select RSS FEED.
  3. Click on CREATE FEED.
  4. Follow the directions on screen.

SAVED SEARCHES

Save Search History (to rerun later)

To save your most recent search:
  1. Click on SAVE SEARCH to the right of the search box.
    (Optional) Follow the onscreen directions to rename your search.
  2. Click OK.
To save a search from earlier in your session:
  1. Click on the HISTORY tab.
  2. Click on the numbered link to the left of the desired search.
  3. Click OK.

Use Saved Search History

  1. Log in.
  2. Click on My NCBI at the top right of the screen.
  3. Click in the box to the left of your desired search.
  4. Click on WHAT'S NEW FOR SELECTED at the bottom of the screen.
  5. Click on the NEW ITEMS link at the right of the screen.
  6. Example: 12 new items

Modify Saved Search History

  1. Log in.
  2. Click on My NCBI at the top right of the screen .
  3. Click on the name of the search.
  4. Edit text in search box.
  5. Click on SAVE SEARCH.
  6. Click OK.

Email Alerts

Note: Not all Entrez databases support updates.

  1. Follow directions to SAVE SEARCH HISTORY, but do not click OK.
  2. Click YES to the right of "Would you like to receive email updates of new search results?"
  3. Follow directions to set frequency of updates.
  4. Select your format preference. If you wish to view the UW Find IT button in your emailed results, select Fortmat as ABSTRACTS as HTML from the drop-down menus.

RefWorks and EndNote

  1. Follow directions to SAVE SEARCH HISTORY, but do not click OK.
  2. Click YES to the right of "Would you like to receive email updates of new search results?"
  3. Follow directions to set frequency of updates.
  4. Select your format preference. If you wish to view the UW Find IT button in your emailed results, select Fortmat as MEDLINE as TEXT from the drop-down menus.
